Empowerment as a strategic human resource practice: Examining its role in enhancing leadership on innovation behaviour in tech start-ups

Sowmiya UK

In India’s dynamic technology start up ecosystem, empowerment has emerged as a critical strategic Human Resource (HR) practice influencing innovation outcomes. Empowered leadership fosters employee autonomy, intrinsic motivation, and a culture of experimentation factors essential for sustaining innovation in fast-changing digital environments. This paper explores how empowerment, as both a leadership style and HR strategy, enhances innovation behaviour within tech start-ups. Drawing from recent studies and organizational examples, the paper identifies mechanisms such as participative decision-making, psychological safety, and trust that link empowerment to innovation outcomes. It concludes with implications for HR practitioners and start up founders seeking to institutionalize empowerment as a driver of creative performance and competitive advantage.
