Emotional intelligence as a driver of effective human resource practices

Surender Kumar

In the contemporary organizational environment, human resource management (HRM) plays a crucial role in enhancing employee effectiveness and achieving organizational goals. Emotional Intelligence (EI), which refers to the ability to understand, manage, and regulate one’s own emotions as well as those of others, has gained significant importance in modern HR practices. This conceptual study examines the role of emotional intelligence in strengthening HRM functions and improving overall organizational performance. The paper is based on secondary data collected from books, research journals, reports, and authentic online sources. It explores the relevance of emotional intelligence in key HR areas such as recruitment, training and development, performance management, leadership, and employee relations. The study highlights how emotionally intelligent employees and leaders contribute to better communication, improved teamwork, reduced workplace conflicts and higher job satisfaction. Furthermore, the paper discusses the relationship between emotional intelligence and employee performance, emphasizing its positive impact on motivation, engagement, and productivity. The study also identifies major challenges in implementing emotional intelligence within organizations, including lack of awareness, resistance to change, measurement difficulties, and cultural barriers. Despite its growing importance, the application of emotional intelligence in HRM remains limited due to these constraints. The findings suggest that integrating emotional intelligence into HR policies and practices can enhance organizational effectiveness and long-term success. The study concludes by recommending structured training programs, emotionally intelligent leadership, and supportive work environments to effectively embed emotional intelligence into HRM practices.
